Indiana People Search Tools
The best place to start a people search in Indiana is MyCase, the state court records portal. Anyone can search it for free. It pulls data from every court in the state through the Odyssey case management system. You type in a name and get back case records from civil, criminal, family, probate, and traffic courts. The site shows case numbers, filing dates, party names, and scheduled hearings. Many court documents are free to view and print right from the search results. It works on all major web browsers.
The Indiana Supreme Court runs MyCase as a public service. It is not the same as an official court record, so keep that in mind. The site states that information "is not to be considered or used as an official court record and may contain errors." For the official version of any document, you need to contact the clerk in the county where the case was filed. Still, it is by far the most useful starting point for an Indiana people search. You can look up cases by party name, case number, attorney name, or business name. Wildcard searches work too. Put an asterisk after a partial name and the system fills in the rest.
Indiana's Courts public records page has more details on what you can and cannot access. Under Indiana Code 5-14-3, also called the Access to Public Records Act, all persons have the right to full information about government affairs. Agencies must respond to written requests within seven days. They may not charge for the first 30 minutes of search time.
You can reach the Indiana Supreme Court Law Library at 317-232-2557 for help with court records. The Indiana State Library is at 317-232-3675.

Criminal History Records in Indiana
The Indiana State Police Criminal History Services page is the go-to resource for background checks. A Limited Criminal History report costs $16.32 by credit card. It covers felonies and Class A misdemeanor arrests in Indiana only. The search uses a person's name, date of birth, race, and gender. Results come back as one of three statuses: "ON FILE," "INCONCLUSIVE RESULTS," or "NO RECORDS FOUND." You can run this search online through the ISP portal. It does not include records from other states. Completeness depends on how well each county reports its data.
For a more complete picture, the National Full Criminal History check uses fingerprints. This one goes through IdentoGO and includes FBI records plus out-of-state data. Call 877-472-6917 to set up a fingerprint-based check. You can also mail a request for a Limited Criminal History to the Indiana State Police at P.O. Box 6188, Indianapolis, IN 46206-6188. Money orders only. Make them out to the State of Indiana. The ISP site notes that if you are not sure which check you need, ask the group that is requesting it.

Indiana Offender and Inmate Search
The Indiana Department of Correction Offender Locator lets you find people who are in state prison right now. Search by first and last name or by DOC number. Results show the facility, projected release date, sentence details, and offense history. The IDOC says to search by both first and last name when you can. That narrows the results. This tool is free and open to the public.
Indiana also runs a Sex and Violent Offender Registry through the IDOC. Zachary's Law created this registry in 2003. It requires sheriff's departments to share detailed info about registered offenders. The purpose is to let the public know the identity, location, and appearance of sex and violent offenders who live, work, or study in Indiana. You can search it by county, name, or address. The IDOC took over the registry from the Criminal Justice Institute on July 1, 2006. You can also search at iCrimeWatch Indiana for county-level results.
For local jail records, use the Indiana County Jail Public Portal. Pick a county from the dropdown and search for current inmates held in that county's jail. This is separate from the state prison system.
